Project Details

The University of Hull replaced legacy student admissions systems with Tribal e:Vision components. Using Agile project methodology, and working closely with a large team of developers and software testers, I helped with a range of issues, the details of which are given below in the 'mini projects' section.

On-line Clearing

Project Summary

The live implementation of a relatively new software package to manage Clearing applicants

Project Details

I lead a project to implement a fairly new piece of software to manage students applying to the university via Clearing. Key points included:

• Escalation of bugs to the software supplier. I was responsible for raising the following issues:
• New textbox area 'widget' required (ref. PPL-383608, SDP-1978); this has since been formally adopted into SITS:Vision
• Action history missing entries (ref. PPL-040175, SDP-1334)
• No validation on date-of-birth field (ref. PPL-040183, SDP-1225)
• Delegation of sub-tasks to other members of the development team
• Full testing and implementation to live environment

Not quite a full-blown project, a mini project is a significant piece of work scoped, tested and implemented using normal software development methodology. A mini project will typically be an improvement to a business process, introducing efficiencies and reducing complexity where possible.

URL housekeeping

Project Summary

Consolidation of all system URLs into a single, central library

Project Details

Working closely with other members of the development team, I was responsible for the bulk of this project, which saw all URLs (both web and email addresses) found within SITS moved to a collection of SLPs.

Over 50 SLPs were created or modified for this task, and hundreds of data objects edited to reference these SLPs.

Managing Student Visas

A project focused around the means to manage student visas via e:Vision

Project Details

I was responsible for helping implement a component in e:Vision to manage student visas. Key points included:

• Ensuring visas are only issued to students after all requisite clearance checks have been passed
• Implement the means to allow administrative staff to clear a visa on a student's behalf
• Provision for multiple visas

Document Upload Report

Project Summary

Significant re-engineering of existing report

Project Details

A report showing clearance check related document uploads was failing to retrieve all records, and the report was also featuring duplicates. Work done included:

• Complete re-engineering of SQL in RQI in order to link STU table to document uploads via CAP / SCC
• Duplicates removed from results set
• Report automatically excludes results based on the users privileges (previously two separate reports were required to achieve this)
• Report filters re-designed

'Confirmation of Offer' Letter

Project Summary

Process created to search for students and then download an offer letter for that student

Project Details

I created a new POD-based report to allow administrative staff to search for a specific student and then produce a PDF document confirming their offer of a place to study at the university. Key points included:

• Report allows staff to search for a student based on various criteria: student name, student code, course title, start date, etc.
• Offer letter created on-the-fly as a PDF document
• Member of staff given the option of either downloading offer letter or attaching to student record
• New SQL created (along with corresponding RQH / RQI records) in order to query SITS based on criteria provided by member of staff

Hot-fixes and Uniface Upgrade

Uniface updated and 35 hot-fixes applied on development system

Project Details

In preparation for the application of a Uniface upgrade and 35 hot-fixes on the university's production SITS environment, I was responsible for managing the upgrade on their development environment. Key points:

• New and modified system parameters reviewed
• Regeneration of user menus through GUO
• Uniface upgraded across four servers
• New and modified web resource files published, with several client-modified JavaScript and HTS files requiring careful merging
• Documentation reviewed and distributed across key stakeholders

New RPA Form

Project Summary

Task-based form created for students submitting a Record of Prior Acceptance

Project Details

I was responsible for creating a new task-based form in order to allow students to complete a Record of Prior Acceptance. Key features included:

• Form issued to students by admissions staff via SSO link
• Conditional text created to present two variants of the form: one for home and one for international students
• Separate screen created to provide guidance notes to students
• JavaScript created to both validate form and show / hide disability-related questions based on information previously provided
• Admissions notified via email once student has completed form
